アップルの創業者 スティーブ ジョブズ氏のスピーチリスニング、3回目です。

前回は、ジョブズ氏の生みの親が、養子縁組先の学歴のなさに怒り、ジョブズ氏を大学まで行かせることを条件に縁組を受け入れた話が語られました。このことが、ジョブズ氏に大きな影響を与えます。

9:30) And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5￠ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

ジョブズ氏が通った大学は"almost as expensive as Stanford"（スタンフォードと同じくらい学費が高い）大学でした。"all of my working-class parents' savings"（労働階級の親の蓄えすべて）が、授業料に消えてしまう額です。

その結果、ジョブズ氏は6か月で大学を辞めてしまいます。そこまでして大学に通う価値を見いだせなかったのです。人生でなにがしたいのかも、大学でなにができるのかも"no idea"だったと振り返っています。生みの親がこだわった大学、育ての親の苦労、そんな思いを知るからこそ、自分のやっていることの価値について敏感だったことがわかります。

大学を辞めるという決断は、確かに"pretty scary"（とてもおっかない）ことだったのですが、後から見れば一番良い決断だったと述べています。その理由は、"stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me"（興味のない必修科目を取らずに済んだ）こと。その代わり、興味のあるものだけ無断聴講しました。

もちろん、好きなことだけやっていたわけではなかったそうです。

"I returned coke bottles for the 5￠ deposits to buy food with,"（食べ物を買うために、コーラ瓶を回収しては5セントに替えていた）こともあれば、11キロ歩いて"get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple."（クリシュナ寺院で週に1回のまともな食事にありつく）ことも。

しかし、こうした"much of what I stumbled into"（多くのつまずき）が"turned out to be priceless later on"(結局後から見るとかけがえのないものだった)と述べています。

こうして精読してみると、ジョブズ氏の生い立ちによって、彼が大学の価値について深く考えたことがわかります。そして、直観を信じて大学を辞めて、興味のあることに集中してしまう。そんな大胆さが、彼の成功の秘密なのかもしれません。
