逆算していくと結構長くなりそうですが、がんばります。

8:29) It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.

So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

ジョブズ氏は"unwed college graduate student"（未婚の大学院生）"の子供として生まれます。しかし、生みの母親は子供を育てることはせず、"adoption"（養子縁組）をすることにしました。彼女は養子縁組先に大学以上の学歴を求めます。そして、ふさわしい先が見つかっていたのですが、育て親になるはずだった夫婦が"they really wanted a girl."（女の子をほしがっていた）ことで、成立しませんでした。

その後、順番待ちをしていた別の夫婦に縁組先が決まりました。しかし、" My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. "（生みの母親は、私の母が大学を卒業していない上に、父が高校を出ていないことを後から知った）ことで、縁組成立が危うくなります。

結局、"my parents promised that I would someday go to college."（私の両親が、私を大学へ行かせることを約束して）事なきを得ました。

さて、ジョブズ氏はここでは厳密に"My biological mother"（生みの親）と"My mother and father"（母と父）を分けています。そして、生みの親が「大学」というものに拘ったことが、ジョブズ氏の後の行動に大きく影響を与えます。
