今回から、3つ目の話 "about death" に入ります。
My third story is about death.
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

ジョブズ氏は17歳の時、印象的な言葉に出会います。
"If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right."
（もし、この日が最後の一日であるかのように毎日を生きれば、必ずそのようになる。）
ここは笑いどころです。いずれみんな死ぬということを、まじめな格言を少しもじってお話しています。しかし、ここからジョブズ氏はある考えを引き出します。
"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
（今日が人生最後の日だったら、今日やろうとすることをやりたいと思うだろうか？）
もし、こう自分に問いかけた結果、"the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, "（何日もの間、答えが「違う」となる）ならば、"I need to change something."（なにかを変える必要がある）のです。
ジョブズ氏は33年間、" I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:"（毎朝、鏡を見るたびに自問する）ことをしたそうです。
自分のやりたいことだけを日々していくことは、社会生活上でかなり難しいと思います。特に仕事においてはそうです。それでも、「なにかが違う」ということが続くようであれば、それは我慢するのではなく、果敢にそのなにかを変えていかねばなりません。
