大学に価値を見いだせず、退学してしまうジョブズ氏。自分なりの道を模索する中で、たくさんのかけがえのないものに出会います。その一例が"Calligraph"でした。

Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

リール大学は人文科学が盛んで、当時は"calligraphy instruction"（カリグラフィーの授業）は"the best in the country"（国で一番）でした。
ここで出てくる"Calligraphy(Wikipedia)とは、ペンを使って書く西洋版書道のようなもの。当時のリール大学は、学内の掲示物などが"beautifully hand calligraphed"（美しいカリグラフで書かれて）いました。すてきですね。
ジョブズ氏はこの授業に潜り込むこみ、"about serif and san serif typefaces"（飾り文字の一つであるセリフやサンセリフ）や、"about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations"（文字の違いでスペースの開け方が異なること）、" about what makes great typography great"（タイポグラフを素晴らしくするのはなにか）を学びました。
さて、ジョブズ氏の話の中で、"calligraphy"（カリグラフ）が突然"typography"（タイポグラフ）と言い換えられています。これは、必ずしもカリグラフのことだけを指しているのではないなと感じます。タイポグラフは、印刷技術の一つとして発達した活字のきれいな見せ方のノウハウです。ジョブズ氏はカリグラフからヒントを得て、コンピューターにも「文字をきれいに見せる機能」を取り入れました。ですから、念頭に置かれているのはカリグラフだけでなく、美しい文字の見せ方そのもののことだと思います。Macが出版物の編集やデザインに強いのは偶然ではないわけですね。
こうして、ジョブズ氏は"science can't capture"（科学でとらえられない）、美しさ、伝統や芸術的で繊細な視界に魅了されていきます。
