西洋書道カリグラフの授業に潜り込み、文字の美しさに目覚めたジョブズ氏。この時の経験は、十年後、彼が開発した初めてのコンピューター 「マッキントッシュ」に生かされます。

And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.（筆者が改行）
And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something ? your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. （注）Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path,(This approach has never let me down,) and (it has) that will make (made) all the difference (in my life).

カリグラフを学んだことが、"any practical application"（具体的に生かされる）とは思っていなかったとジョブズ氏は述べています。しかしその十年後、彼が" were designing the first Macintosh computer"（最初のマッキントッシュを開発していた）時、"it all came back to me"（そのことすべてが蘇った）のです。
その結果、マッキントッシュ コンピューターは"the first computer with beautiful typography. "（世界で初めての美しいタイポグラフを持ったコンピュータ）となります。タイポグラフはコンピュータの「フォント」機能だと思ってください。文字を美しく見せる技術です。
もし、ジョブズ氏がカリグラフの授業に潜り込んでいなければ、"the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts."（マッキントッシュは様々な字体を持ったり、均整のとれた字間のフォントを持つことはなかった）はずです。もちろん、マッキントッシュの機能をコピーしたウィンドウズもしかりです。
ですから、" If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class,"（もし私が退学せず、カリグラフの授業に出ていなければ）、パーソナルコンピュータが素晴らしいタイポグラフを持つことはなかったかもしれません。
余談ですが、ワードでよく使う「MS明朝」と「MS Ｐ明朝」の違いは、「Proportional（プロポーショナル）」機能があるかないかの違いです。前者はどの文字でも均等の字間がとられますが、「P」のつくプロポーショナルフォントは、文字ごとに異なる字間が設定されていて、よりきれいな文字の並びを実現しています。
もちろん、ジョブズ氏はこのことを狙ってカリグラフの授業を受けたわけではありません。そのため、" it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward"（点と点をつながることを期待するのは不可能）と述べています。しかし、後から見れば"it was very, very clear"（つながることは自明であった）のです。
さぁ、ジョブズ氏の３つの話の最初の１つ"about connecting the dots"（点と点をつなげる）の締めくくりです。
"Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. "
（繰り返すのですが、将来を見据えて点と点をつなげることはできません。できるのは後からつなぐことだけです）。
"So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. "
（だから、その点と点が将来なにかの折につながることを信じなければいけません）
"You have to trust in something ? your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. "
（なにかを信じること・・・あなたの直観、運命、人生、因縁、なんでもよいのです）
"Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference."
(みんなが通る道からはずれたとしても、点と点が将来つながるだろうことを信じることは、自らの心に従うことに自信を与えてくれるからです。そして、それが大きな違いをもたらしてくれます。)
さて、最後の部分は原稿が差し替わってきたようです。ちなみに、"down the road"は「将来」という意味です。スタンフォード大学のオフィシャル原稿は、下記でした。
"This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."
（私はこのやり方でがっかりしたことはありません。そして、そのことが私の人生に大きな違いをもたらしてくれました）
さて、いかがだったでしょうか？ 私たちは「今、役に立つ物事」ばかりに気を取られてしまいますよね。でも、「今、役立つ」ものが、将来にわたって役立つかは分からないのです。
もし、なにかに興味をもったなら、ぜひともやるべきです。たとえ、それが一見なにに役に立つかわからないものでも、そのことがかけがえのないことにつながるのだと思います。
だから、人生は面白い。
